A THOMASTOWN mosque will open its doors to residents this Sunday in a bid to address prejudices in the wider community.
The Australian Intercultural Society has organised a series of open days at mosques across Melbourne, the first to be held at the Thomastown Mosque in Station St.
The society's director, Veysel Gencoglu, said people not familiar with Islam could see first-hand the values and practices of Muslims.
``Guests will be provided with a guided tour of the mosque entailing the historical relevance of the features of the mosque and their purposes,'' he said.
``The essential values of Islam including that of the prayer and the Q'uran, holy book of Islam, will be discussed in detail and guests will have the opportunity to participate or observe the congregational prayer.''
Mr Gencoglu said any questions would be answered and visitors could indulge in traditional Turkish finger food.
He said the Australian Intercultural Society was formed in 2000 to build a harmonious multifaith and multicultural society. It conducts interfaith events combining Christians, Jews and Muslims.
